Our Favorite Read-Aloud Books

If you’re looking for a great way to spend quality time with your kids, consider the power of the bedtime story. I have wonderful memories of my husband sitting in the lamp-lit hallway, reading to our kids tucked in their beds.  I’d find my teenagers snuggled into a corner nearby, listening.  It’s a sweet time to be together and a great way to wind down before sleep. Sharing stories unifies us, but also increases vocabulary and knowledge in ways nothing else can.  Take time to do it as often as possible. You won’t regret it.

Here’s a list of some of our favorite read-aloud books with suggestions for age appropriateness. If your children are pre-school ages, see Our Favorite Picture Books.

ABC Books- Perfect Gift for Toddlers

ABC Books

My mother-in-law has given these books to my kids when they turned two years old.  I have helped several of my friends make them as well.

ABC Books

There’s a photo for each letter of the alphabet.  Some of my friends have pasted multiple photos on each page but I like the simplicity of one photo per letter.  Some of our books have fabric covers and some are just plastic covers with a piece of paper slipped in front.  Any way you do it, the kids LOVE, LOVE, LOVE having their own books.

I have used small 5.5 X 8.5 inch binders with a 1-inch ring for these books. The page protectors fit a half sheet of paper. They also measure 5.5 x 8.5 inches. I go to local scrapbook stores to find the paper and use their dye-cuts.  Most stores let you use their dye-cuts for free if you buy their paper!

Our Favorite Board Books for Little Ones

Whenever I am lucky enough to attend a baby shower, I know exactly what gift I will bring. Board books!

Baby with Books

Read to your little ones from the time they join your life. Get a big stack of board books that they can chew and drool on.  Read, read, read and they will love books all their lives.

I have a little girl with dyslexia. Learning to read has been a great challenge for her… but she has never given up. We have read to her all her life and her desire to read on her own trumped every difficulty that has come her way. When she was tiny, I would often find her sitting on big piles of books, transfixed by the pictures as she turned the pages. I’m pretty sure that love of books was exactly what she needed to get through her learning disability.  So, give those babies books they can hold, study, and lick!
